Each week we’ll be introducing you to some inspiring people and businesses from our home in the Northern Rivers area of NSW. To kick off the series, here’s some beautiful pics from one of our favourite local businesses, Harvest Deli and Cafe. Set in a charming 1900′s cottage located in the Byron Hinterland, Harvest is the perfect mix of rustic-casual-chic dining, and the food is just incredible. We caught up with Harvest’s Tristan about the concept behind the business, and the importance of sustainability in how they operate:
“Our concept is based around the elegance of simplicity. Simplicity is often the hardest goal to achieve as there is nothing to hide behind. We achieve this simplicity through growing all of our own vegetables on our organic farm, baking our own organic sour dough in a hundred year old wood fired oven, dry ageing our own meat, buying in only whole cheeses and ripening in the deli, slicing all charcuterie to order, the kitchen making everything from scratch.
We treat all of our water on site. We are heavy recyclers.
We compost all of our green waste and then is used to fertilise our onsite kitchen gardens and Organic farm. We have a 10 KW solar system on the roof. We have little to no food miles with the bakery and the deli being on site, the organic farm is only 500m up the road.

The food we serve is super fresh and uncomplicated, all local produce is either grown by us or sourced from within a very small radius. Our climate lends itself to the less heavy foods for most of the year so local seafood holds a large part of our menu. Signature dishes would be our pork belly, Dry aged deli steaks and the amazing seafood that rolls in the door.

The restaurant is a feel good place and we are striving to be Australia’s most sustainable restaurant. We are calling this 5 star Sustainability, as in you do not have to lose your trimmings to be environmentally conscious.”

Harvest Cafe is located in the historic village of Newrybar, just 15 minutes from Byron Bay, and is open for breakfast and lunch 7-days a week and dinner Thurs-Sat. To discover more about Harvest Cafe and Deli, visit their website, or read their blog
