Immune System Boosts With Anna of Edible Beauty
As we all move into self-isolation what better time to focus on our health and look at ways to boost our immune system.
This week we caught up with the incredible Anna Mitsios of Edible Beauty Australia to chat about immune boosting, slowing down & following your dreams.
Q: As a naturopath what are your top three tips to boost your immune system during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Keeping well and healthy is more important now than ever.
Three of my top tips for boosting your immune system during this pandemic include:
1. Dose up on Vitamin C:
Getting your recommended daily dose of Vitamin C is easy if you are getting an abundance of fruits and vegetables into your diet. Foods such as kiwi fruits, berries, papaya, broccoli and capsicum are fantastic sources of Vitamin C.
Supplementing with an antioxidant powder rich in natural Vitamin C such as our Native Collagen Powder are a great way to ramp up your C intake. Just one teaspoon contains more than four times the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C.
2. Remember your Gut.
Gut health is the key to a healthy immune system with over 80% of our immune system being found in the gut. Ensuring that you are getting enough fibre, adding fermented foods to your diet along with polyphenol rich foods, and eliminating dairy and sugar which inflame the gut lining are the key to encouraging a healthy gut microbiome.
A few easy ways to do this include having 2-3 tablespoons of flaxseed meal daily along with 1 tablespoon of coconut kefir, 1 tablespoon of sauerkraut and always including foods such as broccoli, blueberries, almonds and cocoa in your diet (these are rich in polyphenols)
3. Squeaky Clean with Essential Oils.
Essential oils are fantastic at keeping germs at bay. They are strong antimicrobials whilst being safe to use around the family.
Add 10 drops of eucalyptus, tea tree and/or lavender into a spray bottle of water (2-3 cups) and (1/4 cup) vinegar and use this as a general cleaner for surface areas.
Q: If you’re not working, what’s your favourite way/s to spend time in self-isolation.
I have recently committed to a half hour of “me-time” daily! This has become trickier with a six month old.
Q: If you’re not working, what’s your favourite way/s to spend time in self-isolation.
I have recently committed to a half hour of “me-time” daily! This has become trickier with a six month old.
However I do try to stick to this daily and even if my bubba participates in the activity with me, I consider it “me-time” as it is time spent doing something.
One of the things I find most healing and recharging is a coastal walk, watching and listening to the waves is a wonderful way to switch off and reflect on the day. I also love to listen to music or cook up a storm. This half hour of enjoying what it is I love enables me to reset, refocus and re-spark my creativity and drive.
Q: Health is wealth – what’s the most valuable lesson that you’ve learned transitioning from working in Sydney and New York for a large Australian bank, to becoming a naturopath and creating the incredible brand Edible Beauty?
My transition from the world of finance to the world of health and beauty has taught me that health is truly wealth and that wealth does not always make our heart sing! Transitioning from a career that was not my “calling” to a career that made me excited to wake up in the morning, has taught me to always follow my passion in my life. I love sharing this story with women who feel stuck in their career and providing them with the inspiration and motivation to take action and not waste time in following their dreams – life is too short to be doing something soul destroying. All it takes is a decision and commitment to change and everything flows from there.
Q: What’s your beauty routine and the one product you can’t live without?
My beauty routine is fairly simple and it does tend to change with the season and changes in my body. I will always cleanse with a cleansing milk vs a gel as find it leaves my skin feeling hydrated and clean without stripping it of its natural oils and acid mantle. I then follow with an antioxidant serum which provides a collagen boost whilst brightening my skin.
In the daytime I will use a lightweight lotion followed by an eye cream (an essential to hide the dark circles which often creep in). In the evenings I will use a face oil and/or a more nourishing night cream if my skin is needing a little more hydration.
More and more I am finding that my “inside” beauty routine is just as important as what I use topically.
I always ensure that I am taking a vitamin C / antioxidant powder, gut balancing powder, an alkalinising green powder along with flaxseed meal and an adaptogen powder – this combination keeps my energy, digestion in check and skin looking radiant.
My favourite product is the Edible Beauty Sleeping Beauty Purifying Mousse.
This is a sleep mask which I use on alternate nights after my serum and what I love most about it is it provides a brilliant quick fix for the skin literally overnight.
The mask contains Australian pink clay which is gently purifying along with Australian Snowflower Seed which is antioxidant rich and brightening. Unlike most clay masks it is hydrating and purifying rather than peeling and drying so you can allow it to work its magic whilst you sleep. I recommend this product to all new mums as it can do such an incredible job at reversing signs of tired and lack lustre skin.
Q: What will you be doing to keep your spirits high over the coming weeks?
I will keep taking my ingestible beauty cocktail I have mentioned above, I do feel it is the key to keeping my mood and health in check. I will also be continuing to drink a lot of hot nourishing tea and staying connected with family and friends which is so important during this time. Face time has become something I have been very much enjoying since this lock down!
