At Arnhem we recognise the detrimental effect that the clothing and textiles industry has on our natural environment. Refusing to be complicit in this unnecessary harm to mother earth we made a commitment to reduce the environmental impact of our business practices wherever possible.

Our roadmap to becoming a truly sustainable business has been laid out and we’re taking great strides in the right direction. Implementing changes within our product design and supply chain takes time and is a resource intensive process which we estimate will take 2 - 3 years to fully implement.

To do nothing in the interim was not an option for us, and so in early 2017 we made the pledge to donate 1% of our annual sales to help protect the environment.

1% for the Planet is a global organisation leading a network of businesses, nonprofits, and individuals working together for a healthy planet. Launched in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, former owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, their network consists of more than 1200 member companies and thousands of approved nonprofit partners in more than 40 countries. All Arnhem products will now feature the 1% for the Planet logo, indicating our commitment to give 1% of sales annually to nonprofit organizations dedicated to protecting the environment. 1% for the Planet members have given more than $150 million back to the planet since 2002 and we look forward to contributing via this amazing cause. Visit www.onepercentfortheplanet.org to learn more.

We spent a lot of time researching potential beneficiaries of our donation and we're proud to announce partnerships with the following amazing causes.

Greenfleet is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to connecting people with real climate action. They are Australia and New Zealand's most respected source of biodiverse carbon offsets. Since 1997, they have planted more than 8.7 million native trees across 425 biodiverse forests in Australia and New Zealand to offset carbon emissions on behalf of thousands of leading brands, businesses, councils, universities, NGOs and individuals. Greenfleet exists to make a difference, not a profit. Greenfleet is registered as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC)

They deliver education programs to inspire our global community to help create a cleaner planet for wildlife and future generations. Pick it up. Bin it. #TAKE3FORTHESEA

Rainforest Rescue

Rainforest Rescue has been protecting and restoring rainforests in Australia and internationally since 1998by providing opportunities for individuals and businesses to Protect Rainforests Forever. They do this by purchasing and protecting the biodiversity of high conservation value rainforest, and by re-establishing rainforest through planting, maintenance and restoration. Based in nearby Mullumbimby, Rainforest Rescue is Arnhem's local donation recipient.

Cape Kimberley Wildlife Corridor, the latest threatened rainforest property in the Daintree to be saved by Rainforest Rescue

We are so proud of these three unique causes and look forward to supporting their efforts into the future.

Making changes to our supply chain is the most important and challenging task we face on our journey towards becoming a sustainable business. The fast paced nature our a modern fashion business means that our design and production staff are already pushed to capacity. To relieve pressure on our small team we have employed a dedicated Sustainability Officer who is leading the charge in our pursuit of change while providing support our staff in our group effort towards improving practices across every aspect of our business.

We are in the process of reviewing all aspects of the business - from sourcing sustainable fabrics and manufacturing processes to developing compostable garment and courier bags and ensuring all paper packaging is made from a sustainable FSC certified source. We are also working to ensure all our suppliers have ethical practices; we are carrying out factory audits with our existing supply base while this is a standard requirement for any new suppliers.

We're taking as much immediate action as possible and we're proud of the quick improvements we've been able to make such as the addition of a seamstress to repair faulty or damaged garments, avoiding wastage. We've also produced a wonderful hemp based market shopper which will be available for purchase and shipped free with larger orders.

Every member of team is passionate and dedicated to creating this important change within our business. Our staff are the driving force behind our business and their involvement in this process is critical to our successful transition to a sustainable company. To date, members of our team have driven the following amazing changes -

A journey of 1,000 miles starts with a single step and while we're hopeful of achieving change at a rapid pace, we are aware of the challenge ahead.
